Impact modifiers | additives feature For opaque PLA products requiring high ambient and

low temperature durability, Arkema offers Biostrength 150, a high-efficiency core-shell additive. It is particu- larly effective for durable injection moulding applica- tions says the company. Other impact modifiers for PLA that have been making their mark commercially include Dow Plastics Additives’ Paraloid PMA 500 acrylic modifier that has been shown to boost impact properties in PLA and appears promising for other biopolymers. Another option is DuPont’s Biomax Strong family of functional ethylene copolymers which are said to improve toughness and reduce brittleness in PLA rigid moulded and thermoformed parts at levels as low as 1-3% with little effect on transparency. Leading compounders have been working with these and other additives to formulate bioplastics compounds and masterbatches that deliver strength as well as sustainability. For example, Teknor Apex has developed its Terraloy 9000 series of clear impact modifier masterbatches which contain Arkema’s Biostrength toughener in a PLA carrier. PolyOne is also active in this area with its OnCap

Bio L masterbatches. These contain Dow’s Paraloid BMP 520, a new-generation acrylic impact modifier for PLA. It has been shown to toughen opaque injection moulded PLA with very little effect on HDT or stiffness. In addition, this FDA food-contact compliant grade is said to be effective at both room and sub-zero tempera- tures and also toughens PLA/PC alloys. This month, RTP is announcing the expansion of its line of impact-modified and nucleated PLA compounds for semi-rigid and durable applications. The new products utilize impact modifiers specially tailored for PLA plus proprietary nucleation technology. This combination is said to deliver enhanced impact strength and higher heat-deflection temperature (HDT) versus unmodified PLA. According to RTP’s business manager of emerging

technologies Will Taber, these bio-based compounds have properties that are comparable to many existing petro- leum-based materials in terms of function and process- ability. “Our compounding technology and formulation expertise enables PLA to be considered for much broader use, allowing designers to create eco-conscious products and meet end-use sustainability goals,” he says.
