Hygiene is, and will always be, the weakest link on many farms. An example: during busy periods, cleaning dirty containers or reusable packaging is not always given the attention it deserves. And as we know, this is one of the main causes of dry and wet bubble. During a visit to South Africa, on behalf of Euroveen, I also visited a plant nursery in Bloemfontein. In the past, the company suffered from certain fungal diseases which were spread by refilling used, inadequately cleaned substrate trays with new peat. This is comparable to the reusable packing and containers used in mushroom growing.

Once the root of the problem had been identified, the idea was to clean the trays by hand- which turned out to be unpleasant and time-consuming. It was impossible to find a suitable crate washing machine that could cope with all the different tray dimensions and still clean thoroughly enough. So, the company decided to build their own, and the owner’s son ended up construct- ing a crate washer that fitted the bill.

It has to be said that many of the ideas were copied from similar, existing machines, but the line they use now is more compact and can be used for various tray formats. The angled profiles, between which the trays are guided, are easily resettable, making the machine adaptable for use with a wide variety of crate and tray dimensions.

It is obvious that investing in a machine like this is a lot cheaper than in a new machine – an attractive prospect for mushroom growers. The secret behind its success is using the right spray nozzles. The first nozzles are used to spray hypochlorite, applied copiously over the trays. Then clean water is jetted under high pressure over the trays to rinse them well. Nozzles normally used for fire prevention in hotel rooms appeared to be ideal for spraying the chlorine and the clean rinsing water.

Plently of liquid in a short time, in the right proportions. This example of ‘out of the box thinking’ really cleared the box of trouble!
