parked right by the entrance. I only use it to drive at weddings and other festivities, but here in the region it’s certainly a real eye-catcher.”

Cultivation

Pawlowski’s farm has six growing rooms of 560 square metres and six of 670 each, giving a total growing area of 7400 square metres. Cropping follows a six-week schedule during which three flushes are harvested. The rooms are filled with the farm’s own filler on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The phase III compost comes from four different suppliers - Lemany, Mykogen, Stec and Wrona. That implies a range of varieties. Spyra supplies Factory 1 and the F11, Sylvan the A15 and a variety from Italspawn, the F59, is also

used. The casing soil suppliers are Wokas and Torfan. The substrate for the rooms is prepared and CAC is added on the filling machine, but no water is sprayed into the compost. No water is sprayed in the room at filling either, spraying only starts the day after. On day one and two (taking the filling day as day zero) a total of around 20 litres is applied in two-litre sessions. On day three and four, a futher four litres is applied in session of 0.5 litres. Day seven signals the start of cool down. Due to the multiple composts used, the cool down methods vary to a certain extent, but in general the air temperature is lowered from 20.5 degrees to 17 over the course of four days. In the same period, the RH and CO2 are also reduced, from 96 to

94% and from 2800 to 1400 ppm, respectively. The com- post temperature is lowered in about a week from 27 to 20 degrees. The first day of the first flush is day 17. No water is sprayed onto the mushrooms. At the start of the first flush

the air is 16 degrees, but the temperature is gradually raised to 19 degrees at the end of the flush. The CO2 is at about 1500 ppm, and the RH at 90% during the first flush. After the flush, 14 litres of water are applied, distributed over a whole day, and the air temperature is maintained at 19 degrees. Subsequently, the temperature is gradually lowered to 17 degrees with an RH of 86% and CO2 of 1300 ppm, while the compost temperature stays at 20 degrees Celsius. The second flush lasts about four days, and when it is finished the rooms are given eight litres of water. At the same time the room air is briefly increased to 20 degrees before dropped to 17 or 18 degrees. The total yield is 30-33 kg per square metre. The farm employs 64 pickers.
