FEATURE BIG BAMBOO Big Bamboo

With a higher fibre rating than any hardwood, Bamboo is one of the most durable natural floor coverings available. Not only does it provide a stunning interior aesthetic, but it’s also highly sustainable and eco- friendly. Sarah Robinson looks at what makes bamboo an excellent design- choice for any room.

One of the hottest trends in interior design this season, bamboo can create a subtle and exotic style at a lower cost than traditional hardwoods. Available in a range of tones and finishes, in a variety of formats, it’s highly complementary to any design style and offers ease of installation. It is also extremely durable and easy to maintain. No wonder so many designers and flooring professionals are turning towards bamboo as their floor covering of choice.

Homeowners are starting to consider their floor covering more closely than ever. Occupying one of the largest spaces in the home, a floor really can make or break the overall look of any room. The absolute beauty of bamboo is that it comes in diverse natural patterns.

Bamboo flooring is made from the stalks of the grass, which are cut into thin strips bonded together in layers using adhesive resin. They can be layered horizontally with strips facing up to reveal the natural form of the plant or vertically with the strips turned on their ends to give a striped or streaked effect. Strand woven bamboo is made with shredded bamboo stalks which are mixed with adhesive and pressed together into hard-wearing floor sheets.

Not only can bamboo be stained, like a hardwood but it is actually an excellent alternative to the more traditional floor covering. It’s one of the strongest natural materials used in flooring and is twice as hard as oak. This makes it an ideal choice for homeowners with children or pets.

Another massive advantage to choosing bamboo over wood is that it’s the fastest growing plant on Earth, and therefore one of the one of the most sustainable materials known to man. Every year the parent bamboo plant produces new stems, which can be harvested every five years without ever decreasing the size of the forest.

Available in range of formats from uniclic floorboards to latex- backed floor tiles and traditional engineered flooring, there really isn’t a space inside or outside the house, which cannot benefit from a beautiful, exotic bamboo floor.
