WINTER MAINTENANCE

CASE STUDY Sales Manager Sarah Drury

undertakes induction training at an oil refinery site with winter operator, Kevin Hammond.

De-ice successfully secured the contract to undertake winter service delivery at the site of an oil refinery during winter 2015-16, a contract that will remain in place for three years.

At the beginning of the current season, the operator, Kevin Hammond, responsible for running winter service delivery at the site, coupled with the company's Sales Manager, Sarah Drury, were required to undertake an induction exam - to ensure they have a full appreciation of the site requirements when it comes to service delivery. A walk through the gritting route, coupled with a newly built section, will help to ensure the highest levels of service for the season ahead.

often be gruelling, and sometimes lonely. The unpredictability of the weather never makes it easy - a gritter has to encounter so many different types of weather from severe ice through to heavy snowstorms. Preparation is key - to ensure effective gritting and that their safety remains top of the agenda also.

As they need to go out to sites during unsociable hours, operators always need to be vigilant and to look out for potential incidents where they may be faced with threatening or unsociable behaviour. This rarely happens, but it's something we train all our operators on.

Sarah said: "The oil refinery is unique in its requirements - and very different from the vast majority of sites on our portfolio. There are so many potential hazards and risks that we cannot afford to make any mistakes.

"It's not just a car park, there are myriad different access routes, and health and safety issues to take into consideration. When our operator attends the site, he needs to know what to do if an incident were to occur, such as fire or spillage.

It is difficult to have an appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes and the systems that are used for successful winter maintenance delivery. These can range from monitoring and tracking systems; keeping an eye on the operator's every move, through to weather monitoring and analysis, in order to mobilise an operation as soon as the temperatures begin to drop. Everything is geared around making the gritters job as easy as possible; using the winter machinery that is appropriate for the size of the site is equally important. An 18-tonne lorry in a small car park is as ineffective and dangerous as a pedestrianised machine being used at a logistics park. At the end of the day,

"At the end of the day, we can't have just anyone turning up to service the site. We need to ensure that anyone who may need to attend the site either regularly, or as back up, are up to speed on the site in question and that they have passed the complete induction exam. This day spent at the oil refinery and the subsequent training are vital components for service delivery success."

Vicky Lopez continues: "Our operators represent our business, and the work that they carry out each winter is mission critical to our customers - we absolutely have to have best of breed.

"At the beginning of every winter season, we bring them together to run through manual training; the processes and procedures that we follow, along with the vehicles and bespoke customer requirements. It is vital that we arm ourselves in the best possible way.

"Our gritters represent our business, they are the front line, and we have to 100% rely on the work that they do. This is why the induction training is vital, along with complete knowledge of our own systems and procedures.

"There is so much more to this job than just shovelling salt or driving a big lorry. And companies need to adequately arm and prepare themselves for the season ahead."

they need to work to their optimum and to be armed appropriately.

At De-ice we work with large number of organisations across the UK - supporting them in their winter maintenance delivery. We tailor our service according to the client and the site in question. And we thoroughly prepare with the client well in advance of the season, leaving no stone unturned. Leaving winter preparation too late can have disastrous consequences for the company, leaving them exposed to the potential for a serious accident on their site, and a possible litigation claim.
