FIRE SAFETY & DISASTER RECOVERY
EXTREME PROTECTION AND DETECTION
Reliable fire detection, alarm response and early intervention are essential to protect people and mission-critical assets. The majority of applications are
fully protected by conventional fire detectors; however, a number of challenging environments require a higher level of protection that cannot adequately be served by standard technology, Siemens discuss.
For critical applications, Aspirating Smoke Detectors (ASDs) provide reliable fire detection, delivering very early and accurate fire detection and ensuring safety, risk management and business continuity.
ASDs detect smoke before it is visible to the human eye. Unlike conventional smoke detectors, they actively draw smoke to the detector through boreholes within a piping system that runs throughout the protected area. This offers a significantly higher level of protection as standard systems can only respond if smoke can actually reach the detection element, which can be too late.

systems eliminates the risk of false alarms and accurately differentiates between dust and smoke, delivering instant warning of a potential fire.
An excellent example of usage is in the datacentre environment, where the consequence of loss of data is disabling to business operations. These locations have changed radically in terms of airflow and cooling methodologies, which mean that traditional fire detectors are too slow and insensitive to respond to a fire event. Increased airflow is one of the key areas where datacentre managers can make significant energy savings, however high air flow will cause heat and smoke to cool and disperse. This will affect the principles on which today’s
conventional detectors respond. Furthermore, instances where the air is replaced and not re-circulated will prevent smoke from accumulating. The ASD system is able to address changing conditions in cooling methodologies and alter its sensitivity to a different setting to accommodate the new environment.
A further benefit is that ASDs can also be used in computer cabinets to alert users to the overheating of computer cables or individual computer components, preventing damage to valuable equipment.
