WHAT’S NEW? INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2016
Debra Ward from Condeco spoke to Tomorrow’s FM editor Rebekah Thompson about International Women’s Day 2016, and what it means to her, FM and how she marked the day with her Condeco colleagues.
Debra has had a varied and successful career, which recently saw her win a ‘Women in the City’ Achievement
Award. Having started in hospitality, she is interested in how the philosophy of the increasingly service-oriented world has played a key part in the success of women in the FM industry.
Debra believes that developments in FM and the design of offices; flexible working practices, and more service- oriented cultures, have made the workplace a more accessible place for women:
TFM: FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT WOMEN IN
THE CITY? DW: Women in the City is an organisation that was started in 2003, by a woman called Gwen Rhys, inspired by women, she wanted to create a community with a view to empowering women in business. They host monthly events, seminars, lunches and awards all to promote and support women in industry. They are very much about what you can do for other people and often sponsor events.
TFM: WHAT DID CONDECO DO TO COMMEMORATE WOMEN’S DAY?

DW: We have been promoting it all over the @CondecoSoftware twitter page, with the hashtag #poweringchangeIWD2016, I spoke at three different events including the BIFM WIFM special interest event – attended by both men and women - and we held a brunch for all the female employees at Condeco.
TFM: YOU’VE BEEN WORKING ON FLEXIBLE WORK SPACES; DO YOU THINK THE CHANGE IN OFFICE CULTURE IS HELPING WOMEN TO
INTEGRATE MORE? DW: Of course – what do women naturally do well? Communicate, collaborate and talk to each other, so naturally a more flexible working environment would better help women, men too. Traditionally men are more about ‘hunkering down’ in the workplace where women like to discuss opinions and options with each other; if we can encourage women to open up the forum to communicate, by creating a more flexible office space, then it can only be beneficial to everyone and feed collaboration!
