HR FOCUS
Selden is an independent manufacturer of cleaning and hygiene chemicals, and Sales Director Mark Woodhead says the changes to COSHH and the other recent change from the EU called REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) are joined at the hip and have to be seen as such. He says these changes should bring manufacturers and other stakeholders in the supply chain much closer together, because now manufacturers and distributers have a duty to ensure end users have the correct product for the task they’re undertaking. Likewise, end users must communicate to suppliers the tasks they’re carrying out, and the substances they are using.
Mark said: “It’s all about risk assessment, but the ever expanding Safety Data Sheets which can sometimes be 20 pages long, are totally confusing for the layman, we could see that the volume of work required to keep the right side of the law was becoming unbearable”

HELP IS AT HAND It was this conundrum that has
inspired companies to develop new software, to help their customers stay on the right side of the new regulations.
CHANGES IN EUROPEAN
REGULATIONS WILL MAKE THE JOB
JUST A LITTLE BIT TOUGHER.
The programme is, essentially, a QR Code-based, constantly updatable menu available on-site. It allows contract cleaners to work safely and within the new legislations with regard to the production of up- to-date Safety Data Sheets, Risk Assessments, dilution rates and Personal Protective Equipment. It also enables the production of
workfl ow charts and task cards – again on-site, and updates them to suit changing job requirements or product formulations. They are designed to take the stress out of dealing with all the red tape and allow managers and cleaning operatives to get on with the job in hand.
Mark said: “It’s all about fi ne-end customer service. And it saves millions of pieces of paper!”
Procurement professionals are required to have an in-depth knowledge of the tasks that need undertaking and the products they’ll require for the job, and the changes in European regulations will make their job just a little bit tougher.
TRAINING But COSHH management systems
can help, and there’s also a number of training courses available to help FM’s steer through these new regulations. The changes will not become mandatory until June 2015, so there’s still time for the FM industry to take heed and make sure they’re on the right side of the law.
