VENDING & WATER COOLERS
WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, CHANGES ARE BREWING
Martin Armitt, Marketing Controller for Aimia Foods, has worked with coffee for more than 15 years, so he knows a thing or two about the importance of a strong blend and a good quality brew. Here, Martin shares his experience with Tomorrow’s FM, and outlines what is on the vending horizon.
For a long time vending machines have had a poor reputation in consumer’s minds, with a dull, uninspiring product offering – a triumph of function over form, that fails to indicate quality and innovation. With expectations for professional coffee at an all-time high and good quality coffee proven to have a positive effect on workers, modern-day vending is evolving to encompass ‘theatre’ as a lead component for success.
Consumers walk by vending machines every day, often preferring the high street alternative; it has become essential for our industry to bring the vending experience more in-line with current trends and push the boundaries of consumer expectations.
The ‘theatre’ experience combines a subtle blend of interaction, style, design, accessories and overall credibility in a machine that creates a compelling offering to pass the consumer test. This evolved concept holds a certain presence which has been absent from traditional square box-shaped vending machines and rouses the customer’s interest to stop and explore its features and benefi ts further.

Looking ahead, to the future of vending, the pressure on catering and facilities managers to deliver exciting concepts for site users and visitors will continue to increase as the UK coffee market grows. Coffee outlets are expected to rise from 16,500 to 20,500 over the next fi ve years with premium and espresso-based coffee becoming mainstream. Coffee machines need to take a leaf from the high street producer’s book in terms of colour, style and branding, in order to meet the demands of the savvy coffee-loving consumer.
