HYDRATION MATTERS FOR A HEALTHY WORKFORCE

WaterCoolersDirect.com offers some simple tips on how to keep your staff alert, fresh and hydrated throughout the day: just add water.
Many businesses are aware of the importance of keeping their staff hydrated for productivity purposes, employee health and wellbeing, as well as it being a legal requirement to provide accessible drinking water. The brain is particularly sensitive to changes in water balance, which affects mental performance in concentration, creativity and alertness.
Being dehydrated can also have a negative impact on our moods, making us feel a bit down, agitated and tired. Maybe providing a constant supply of fresh, drinking water can influence healthier employees in a happier work environment.
Canned sugar and so-say energy drinks seem to be a firm favourite in the workplace. However the recent negative exposure such beverages have received in the media, alternatives such as water, tea, and fruit squash are becoming more popular. Encouraged by the government’s proposal of a sugar tax and a 2014 Mintel report stating
bottled water is fast becoming the drink of choice in the UK, facility managers and businesses would benefit from assisting and supporting the more responsible drink choices being made by the workforce.
Water coolers and instant drinking water hot taps allow an office of any size to provide filtered, great tasting beverages at the push of a button. But it is widely known that the bottled water sector is under a lot of scrutiny due to its negative impact on the environment. What is initially thought of as a good, healthy, personal drink selection quickly becomes a bad environmental choice.
A plumbed or mains-fed cooler is a convenient and reliable, point of use, bottled water cooler alternative. The water cooler plumbs directly into the water mains in the building and filters and chills the water before dispensing. This saves buying and storing large plastic bottles and the carbon footprint that delivering and transporting them causes. For example if you have an office of 20 people and currently use two bottled water coolers, you could save almost £1800 over three years and take 624 bottles off the road by switching to a plumbed in solution!
Some plumbed-in cooler models are multi-functional and are also able to deliver hot water on tap unlike the bottled alternatives. This enables businesses to provide instant hot beverages, as well as chilled to their workforce, further improving the time and cost savings associated with instant water dispensers. Not to mention the increase in staff productivity, British workers are estimated to lose 24 minutes a day making a hot drink round. Tea and coffee are incredibly popular office

drinks, with 70 million cups of coffee being drunk everyday in the UK, therefore it will only benefit the office that such drinks can be made quicker and easier.
BENEFITS OF A HYDRATED
WORKFORCE: Improved concentration Levels – The brain is made up of 85% water and so needs to be hydrated to keep it working at its best and to aid concentration. When concentrating for long periods of time, like when at work, it’s more likely these levels will drop.
Feel less tired – The body needs to be kept hydrated to enable it to work at its optimum. Drinking water really does give you more energy and leaves you feeling less lethargic, enabling the long work hours many of us experience.
Sorted skin – Skin is the largest organ of the body and so needs looking after. By staying hydrated your skin is improved. Many offices create adverse environments for the skin through heating and air conditioning systems that dry the skin out. As well as providing dry skin with more moisture, drinking water also flushes out toxins helping to remove bacteria and preventing spots.
Keep headaches at bay – A lot of headaches are due to dehydration so keeping topped up with water is a good way to prevent them. Many employees in offices use computers for long periods of time, which can induce headaches. It can also help to drink a glass of water (ideally at room temperature as it enters the blood stream quicker) at the first sign of a headache to soothe it.
