SUSTAINABILITY SCHOOL TAKES FM BACK TO THE BLACKBOARD

In January, the hugely successful Supply Chain Sustainability School opened its doors to the world of facilities management, and who better to head up the move into sustainable FM than Shaun McCarthy OBE, he speaks to Rebekah Thompson about the new school.

It would seem wrong to have an issue dedicated to sustainability without devoting space to Shaun McCarthy. Chair of Sustainability for the London 2012 Olympics, Chair of The London Sustainable Development Commission, TfL Sustainability Adviser and Director of the Greenshoots Foundation, he’s practically the Don of sustainability, so it’s really no wonder he’s also an OBE.

I spoke to Shaun on his morning commute, as he took the train and then the bus into work on a Monday morning – yes, he even uses sustainable transport! With sirens blaring and the generic tannoy lady dictating the bus stops in the

SO TELL ME A BIT ABOUT THE

SUSTAINABILITY SCHOOL? We launched the school back in 2012, and it was primarily about construction. The thinking at that point was around the Olympics, as I had a big role in it. Driven by that and other large projects at the time there was a very high standard set for sustainability.

Back then, constructors and contractors had their own responsibility policies and there was a real feeling that they were leaving their supply chains behind. The competence, reliability and responsibility was not there, so

in 2012 we started with seven contractors and we went and applied for some money from charities for the construction industry and training boards, to start the school.

We opened in the middle of 2012 and it’s gone from strength to strength since then; we’ve increased from seven partners to 25 and we’re up to about 7,000 members now.

WHY DO YOU THINK IT HAS

BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL? I think part of the reason for its

success is that it’s very clever in how the software works and it’s very well prioritised in terms of how it coordinates users. The system will look at the company and what it needs to take and learn from the
