10 QUESTIONS
10 QUESTIONS WITH... DEANNE LE GRESLEY
Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Deanne Le Gresley, Channel Islands Managing Director from G4S. 4 5 1
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
Before I went to University I worked in a fruit shop. My first job after graduation was a trainee accountancy position in Oxford, which I did for a year before moving across to SC Johnson Wax where I qualified as a CIMA accountant.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
G4S in Jersey were looking for some help in their Finance function and I was brought on board to help. The particular project I was recruited for went well and I made the move across to an operational role.
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU
MOST ADMIRE?
I am a great fan of honest endeavour for the good of society (who isn’t!) and this is particularly admirable in a business context when there are competing pressures. In the Channel Islands, the local Co-operative Society is especially good at this. I admire their Chief Executive Colin McLeod for his efforts in this area.

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR
WOULD YOU BUY?
My current car is a Honda CRV that is not particulary well cared for as I don’t get very excited about vehicles. I would prefer a really nice bicycle or some fancy walking shoes.
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? The FM industry plays a key role with our customers by managing difficult tasks to a high standard and in a safe way. I think that the emphasis of the industry needs to be on quality and safe services, perhaps with a move away from the emphasis on cost savings as a primary motivation for engagement. This would improve standards and allow FM companies to focus on training and its people to a greater degree.
6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU
WERE GROWING UP?
Monty Python and the Lion Tamer is the first thing that comes to mind! Actually I did want to be a teacher rather than an accountant. During my business career, I have managed to incorporate this wish through a focus on developing skills in coaching and mentoring
7 8
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
I really enjoy walking and the outdoors; the Channel Islands has some beautiful walks right on my doorstep.
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY WITH
ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD
OR ALIVE, WITH A FOURTH COOKING AND A FIFTH PROVIDING THE MUSIC, WHO WOULD THEY BE
AND WHY? I would really like Jamie Oliver to cook the dinner and Carole King to provide the music. In terms of the guests, my love of literature would come to the fore and I would chose Christina Rossetti, Elena Ferrante and TS Eliot.
9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? Providers will need to focus on quality and safety with a greater emphasis on qualified professionals. The industry will need to be able to attract good people in a competitive market and this will need demonstrably excellent practices. FM companies will need to demonstrate value rather than be seen purely as a cost-saving part of the overall service chain.

PAUL JAKEWAY, MARKETING DIRECTOR
UK & IRELAND FROM DEB GROUP: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN INTERN TO RISE TO
YOUR LEVEL? That they need to get a professional qualification in their chosen field and never stop training or participating in learning opportunities. They also need to develop personal qualities, particularly in the resilience area, because rising up through the ranks needs hard work and a tough skin.
