WASHROOM HYGIENE
Sustainability Built In
Washroom products and systems that offer “built-in sustainability” help to control consumption, keep down costs and make life easier for staff – while also helping facilities to tick all the right boxes. Charlotte Branwhite, of Tork manufacturer SCA, tells us more.
There was a time when sustainability was felt by most people to mean virtually the same thing as “environmentally-friendly”.
It would conjure up images of newly- planted saplings and unpolluted rivers traversing lush, green meadows. But sustainability has come to have a much broader meaning. These days it is generally held to cover the three pillars of “People, Planet and Profit”.
The “Planet” part of the equation refers to the importance of preserving the planet for generations to come. In other words, the “environmentally- friendly” aspect of sustainability that includes forest management, water conservation and energy reductions.
The “People” factor is about helping the community, while also making life easier for staff and customers. And the “Profit” side refers to

the importance of keeping an organisation’s finances in order to enable it to carry out good, ethical practices on an ongoing basis.
Therefore to be truly sustainable, an organisation needs to examine every aspect of its business to ensure that it is considering the three “P”s, every step of the way. And the products themselves should offer “built-in sustainability” – in other words they should have been made with factors such as ease of use, cost- effectiveness and environmental considerations firmly in mind.
Products with built-in sustainability may appear, on the face of it, to be fairly standard. But they will incorporate any number of features that might seem insignificant when looked at separately, though when added together will add up to a highly sustainable product.
Take, for instance, our own Tork Matic Hand Towel Roll Dispenser. This incorporates a built-in spirit-level to make it easier to install the dispenser in line with the wall. Inside the unit there is also an integral business card holder to provide end-users with easy access to the distributor’s contact details.
Built-in sustainability can also be achieved by naturally reducing product consumption. This not only reduces waste and costs, it also makes life easier for the facilities manager. The Tork Matic Hand Towel roll system, for example, has been designed to give out towels one at a time to help reduce consumption. As a result, the cleaner can afford to make fewer maintenance checks to assess refill levels. And fewer refills in turn bring further sustainability advantages such as lower transport costs and fewer emissions.
