CASE STUDY A Slip-Free Stay

The Ampersand Hotel is one of London’s most conveniently placed hotels for sightseeing, with Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and some of the capital’s best museums just a few steps away.

The boutique hotel opened in 2012 in South Kensington and is handy for visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and Royal Albert Hall. It has 111 rooms and suites, a gym and two informal dining rooms serving modern Mediterranean food and afternoon tea.

Luxury and comfort is a key ingredient of the service offered and, as with all such hotels, safety and comfort of guests is paramount, especially in those areas of any hotel prone to slip hazards – most notably the bathrooms. For not matter how luxurious they may be, slippery bathroom surfaces, floors, baths, showers and wet room areas are recognised hazards and need to be addressed on a regular basis.

Dean Spackman, Ampersand’s Engineering Manager, is responsible for ensuring that all safety aspects of the hotel are kept in check and recently called in anti-slip specialists Traffik UK Ltd to look at the levels of safety of the bath tubs in the hotel’s 111 bathroom suites.

He said: “This is an area which we are constantly monitoring to ensure the upmost safety for our guests and anti-slip checks on all bathroom surfaces are part of our regular safety regime. Traffik were called in to look specifically at the anti- slip properties of 50 bath tubs. Previous

Installing anti-slip treatments in one of London’s finest hotels is par for the course for Traffik UK Ltd. They give us the inside scoop on their recent successful deal with the Ampersand Hotel.

anti-slip treatment did not extend to some areas of the baths – particularly the backs of the tubs. Traffik were approached to test and to apply their Anti-Slip bath treatment – a process which was not only extremely quick but also highly effective.”

Hotels, fitness and leisure centres, nursing and care homes, swimming pools and spas are all increasingly becoming aware of the need to reduce the slip risk and the accident claims that inevitably follow.

Traffik’s range of anti-slip treatments include PU sealers, bath mats and other coatings, which greatly reduces the chance of accidents by increasing the slip resistance of wet surfaces. The company’s anti-slip treatment used at The Ampersand Hotel is not a coating but a semi- permanent alteration to the surface of the tiles, creating a micro tread within the surface of the baths which provides more grip.

The bath treatment is applied non-disruptively and is effective immediately – all the bathrooms at the Ampersand were completed in one day causing no disruption to room occupancy. Traffik’s non slip treatment does not wear out, lasts for many years and is also ideally suited for use on stone, ceramic and porcelain bathroom floors, showers and wet rooms meeting pendulum values in excess of 36+ in the wet whilst also being comfortable under foot.

Dean Spackman added: “We were delighted with the results; the baths look good, are safe and, bearing in mind the speed of application and the complete lack of disruption to each room’s use, made the whole operation highly cost effective and obviously worthwhile.”
