CASE STUDY Bad Day At The Office?

One of our clients is a large commercial carpet cleaner, holding a number of contracts with office premises in his area. On this particular occasion, an employee was cleaning the carpets in a four-storey building when he lost control of the £4,500 carpet cleaning machine he was using. Unfortunately, the machine tumbled down the stairwell, landing upside down, damaged beyond repair.


We received a call the very next day, from a very worried business owner, letting us know that the incident had happened and asking for our help. His main concern was that he would be unable to satisfy existing contracts and, ultimately, that he would lose business if the insurance claim process turned out to be lengthy.

The timescale below gives a very brief overview of the process:


Day 1 – accident occurs


Day 2 – matter reported to Gleaming Insurance and passed to the underwriters


Days 3-8 – investigations, estimates and processing of the claim


Day 9 – the client had the funds in his account to replace the machine

Just over a week after the incident had occurred, our customer had funds in his bank account to replace his machine and continue to service his existing contracts. And the insurance excess? Only £150 compared to the average of £250.


Obviously, our client was thrilled to bits with the speed of the process but the story doesn’t end there!


Remember that this heavy carpet cleaning machine had tumbled down the stairs and, on its journey, had damaged both the stairs and the landing where it ended up. The damage caused was costly to repair, requiring the services of an outside company.


Place yourself in your customer’s shoes. Would you allow someone to clean your house or office premises if they weren’t insured in the event they damaged something they were cleaning?


Fortunately, with one of our policies “damage to property being worked on” is an integral part of the policy cover we offer and we believe that all businesses operating in the cleaning industry should have this cover as standard. Unless you have it in writing that your policy provides this cover, then it is almost certainly excluded and, without this cover, you are not fully insured.
