Falling For The First Time


For those uninitiated among us, attending the Cleaning Show could have been something of a shock to the system. All the walking, talking and smiling at everyone can take its toll if you’re not suitably prepared. But it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. Kayleigh Sumer, Sales Representative at the Supplies House, was exhibiting at her first ever show last month, so we found out how she got on.


Tomorrow’s Cleaning (TC): So this is your first cleaning show, how has it been?


Kayleigh Sumer (KS): It’s been very interesting. In terms of experience gained, you can’t put a price on it, really. From an exhibiting point of view, I actually underestimated how hard it would be. It looks easier than it actually is. But in terms of the knowledge of products and approaching potential customers, it was really rewarding.


I’ve been with Supplies House for eight months now and in the last two or three days, I’ve learned so much about the business that I didn’t know before. You’d be amazed just how much you do learn in such a short space of time, especially when you see other businesses trying to sell their brand, trying to sell their products.


TC: Have you ever been to any other exhibitions before this? How does it compare?

KS: I’ve been to a few shows before, but not cleaning shows, but as a visitor, not as an exhibitor. Exhibiting, it’s completely different. I found it quite challenging – not just physically but mentally as well. I’ve had some people that have asked me questions, and I had no knowledge about the product that they were asking me about, so I had to pass them on to a colleague, but while I did this, I also shadowed who I asked to pick up some of that knowledge for myself so that next time, when somebody asks, I’ll know what to say, so it’s been a great learning curve for me.


TC: Something that people don’t consider is how tiring exhibiting can be. How did you find it?


KS: Brian Chapman, our Managing Director, did say to me ‘you’ll be very tired at the end of each day’, and I thought ‘I work every day, nine to five, I have a three year old, it’ll be a piece of cake’, but it’s actually not. It’s very draining by the end of the day. You have to be on point all the time, you have to be approachable, you can’t just sit back and watch the competition or potential customers or leads just walk past you.


TC: So has it been a beneficial experience, not just for The Supplies House but for you as well?


KS: The show has been very successful for both myself and the company. The first day we started exhibiting, we were so busy. I did not

stop all day. I felt like I started at nine and within a couple of hours the day was done. During the second day we slowed down a bit; I didn’t get as many leads as the day before, but on the last day, we were very busy again.


TC: And will you be coming back for the next show in 2017?


KS: I’ll definitely be back for another show. My aim is to stay with Supplies House long term; this isn’t a temporary stop for me. I’ve been there for eight months now, and it’s been an emotional rollercoaster, up and down, there’s a lot of things that I still need to learn, but there’s a lot of things I have learned, not only about the business, not only about Supplies House, but about myself as well.
