THE CLEANING SHOW REVIEW

The Future Of Cleaning But enough about me! “What else was going on at the show?” I hear you cry. Well, one of the big draws across the three-day extravaganza was at the Lecture Hall, for Platinum Sponsor Mitie’s keynote speech on the future of the cleaning industry. As automation begins to creep more and more into what we do, it seems inevitable that it will start to play a larger part in our industry, as well as many others. And during their keynote presentation, Paul Castle and Peter Smith explained that this automation might not necessarily be in the form of futuristic, dystopian robot cleaners.

Instead, they feel that with the use of handheld devices and smartphones – that apparently hold more power than the technology behind the Apollo space mission – technology can act as a driver for change in the industry. They also discussed the notion that, as more people begin to work from home or operate in a ‘hot desk’ style, agile office, that more flexible, cost effective service models need to be implemented when it comes to cleaning. The presentation, which was repeated throughout the show, pulled big crowds, and it’ll be interesting to see how accurate Mitie’s predictions turn out to be.

Elsewhere in the Lecture Hall, many came to watch former England Rugby Union Scrum Half Kyran Bracken open proceedings with a keynote presentation on the importance of teamwork. Drawing on his experiences in the 2003 World Cup winning side, he explained how, through solid teamwork, innovation and strong leadership, even the most ambitious goals can be achieved.

Fun And Games But it wasn’t all business during the Cleaning Show, there were plenty of exhibitors who captured the imagination of guests and really had a bit of fun in the process. Innovise Software, who were launching their new Timegate software, paid homage to Back to the Future, with one of the original, iconic Delorean cars from the movie on their stand. Complete with Flux Capacitor and hoverboard, it certainly pulled in a lot of passersby, including none other than Sean Kelly, host of popular TV show ‘Storage Hunters’, who made the trip to the Excel especially to see the car up close.

Elsewhere, Nilfisk proved to be one of the ‘must-visit’ stands at the show, thanks in no small part to their remote control scrubber dryer rally, where visitors could drive mini scrubber dryers (complete with ‘Stig’-esque riders) around a track in a quest for glory. While the Formula 1 theme tune may have grated on some of the nearby exhibitors by the Thursday afternoon, it was a great bit of fun to draw in guests (and exhibitors who managed to get a free minute!).

I’m not ashamed to say that the Tomorrow’s Cleaning crew gave it a bash, and I’m pleased to say that your humble editor came in first place. There was no trophy, but having the bragging rights around the office was more than enough of a victory for me.
