Built into this schedule were fortnightly meetings between Treforest Customer Support Centre Manager Richard Harris and Bristol Port Company’s Mobile Plant Manager Neil Steer to provide an update on the progress of the refurbishment. Neil comments: “We appreciated Volvo’s approach to working with us on the project and the regular review meetings, not least that the work was completed in the allotted 12 week period. We’re very pleased with the process and overall outcome.” Each refurbishment carried out by Volvo receives a dedicated engineer to the machine for the duration of the work and a supervisor who oversees all work carried out. Richard Gee comments: “At Volvo CE we are able to carry out refurbishment work at any of our eight locations across the country. When considering refurbishment work we would usually deem a 50% saving against a new machine as viable but will work with our customers to find out what is required and then carry out the

work needed to the highest standard. By carrying out this refurbishment Bristol Port Company have added around 8000 hours extra life to their L220E.” The L220E left Treforest to be delivered back to Bristol Port Company’s stock yard on Royal Portbury Dock on 23 October where it is back carrying out rehandling duties on a variety of product.

Neil Steer concludes: “Opting to have the first of our L220s completely overhauled and refurbished has worked out as a 50% saving over buying a brand new loading shovel. With all the work done which has been very comprehensive, we certainly expect to get another 8000 hours of practical service life out the machine. We have a second L220E and then an F model awaiting a similar refurbishment process so providing the team at Volvo submit another favourable quotation we will have no hesitation in repeating the exercise.”
