Underpinning the total recycling operation both at Edmonton and on demolition project sites is an impressive array of Volvo excavators and loading shovels. In total J O’Doherty Haulage operates 50 Volvo branded excavators and shovels including the plant sporting the Embassy Demolition logo. More recently the company has purchased a forty eight tonne High reach EC480D 3 piece demolition rig together with four, twenty-two tonne EC220D excavators rigged for secondary demolition duties. “Equipping the machines with the full demolition specification and additional hydraulic services means we have full flexibility for the contracts we are undertaking which can be anything from full demolition projects to muck shifting, material or waste handling.” comments John Rochester. “We’ve been running Volvo machines for many years and the reason for this is simple. The machines have a good build quality, they’re robust and we can rely on them in all of our applications. Furthermore, we enjoy excellent service support from the Volvo team and all the machines are covered by Volvo’s Blue service agreements for additional peace of mind,” he continues. And these sentiments apply equally to the line-up of Volvo loading shovels with L120 and L150 models of varying ages taking charge of rehandling processed materials around the site – the latest model to arrive being a 25 tonne L150G. “To back up what we think about our Volvo loading shovels we’ve got a 2001 L120D that’s clocked up 39000 hours and is still going strong on the original powertrain components,” says John. “That’s a real testament to product quality in my opinion.”
Another major investment at the Edmonton yard is the addition of a fully operational batching plant including new aggregate storage bins producing ready mixed concrete from both virgin and recycled aggregate. In addition, O’Doherty has constructed a purpose built workshop for servicing the 70-strong fleet of Volvo road trucks. The main stay of the haulage fleet is made up of Volvo FMs with some purpose built FMXs either configured as eight wheel tippers, roll on/roll off container lorries, grab lorries with dedicated vehicles for handling skips and mixers for the concrete division. With the development of the Edmonton yard dedicated to the company’s recycling activities, J O’Doherty has acquired a further three acre site nearby which is used to park the fleet of lorries and to store plant when it eventually comes off third party sites. Again this facility has a purpose built workshop for maintaining all of the mobile plant and has allowed the company to be fully compliant when it comes to maintenance issues for both its vehicles and plant. Looking back, hindsight is a wonderful thing of course, and J
O’Doherty Haulage Ltd can take pride that its foresight in becoming a self-sufficient operation has seen the company flourish and continue to expand – even through a pretty damning recession. It has full accreditation according to ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 and has numerous accolades when it comes to fulfilling its green credentials and care for the environment. The company has plans to expand still further to fulfil its quota as one of the Capital’s largest independent waste recycling concerns.
