there will be many chances for young professionals to assume prominent roles within their companies and the industry as a whole.” Beckett Hollenbach, partner at JLT Re, adds that he sees it as a very attractive industry for aspirational graduates—especially given some of the high quality training schemes some firms offer. “Most of the underwriting and broking firms provide graduate

training programmes which provide a six-month to two-year training scheme to provide a comprehensive base of knowledge for reinsurance to set you up for the future in the industry,” he says. “Although the reinsurance industry is generally not as lucrative as the banking sector of the City, a young professional can carve out a very rewarding career that provides more of a work/life balance.” Tom Gray, reinsurance broker, property catastrophe and retrocession at TigerRisk Partners, agrees that the profession offers young people many interesting and varied career paths but also notes that these sometimes lack structure. “There are a lot of different jobs in the re/insurance market so there

are many directions where a young professional can take their career,” Gray says. “There are people with very technical jobs, like building risk models, and people who are more sales focused, working in business

development. The challenge is that these career paths are often poorly defined, so you have to be adaptable and show initiative.” Ian Newman, partner, property and speciality at Capsicum Re,

agrees. “You can see by the number of applications to every position that there is a far greater awareness of the industry from school and university leavers than when I graduated. There is definitely a better perception of the industry as an exciting place to work.” Ben Galloway, underwriter international casualty at Ascot, stresses the scale and scope of the industry within major economies such as the UK and also its intrinsic importance to society— meaning it will forever offer a stable and secure profession to those who choose it as a career path. “The insurance industry is a huge player in the UK and global economy with plenty of different roles and opportunities,” he says. “For young professionals who like dealing with people and enjoy working in a dynamic market, the insurance industry is certainly attractive. “There will always be a requirement for insurance as businesses and households need to transfer risk to insurers. This means that insurance offers a relatively secure and stable industry in which to work.”
