“This is probably the only industry where your development depends entirely on your will to develop and climb the ladder and not on pre-set criteria.”

Name:

Antoine Bdadouni

Company: Guy Carpenter Job:

Senior vice president, EMEA

Timeline: 2015: Senior vice president, EMEA, Guy Carpenter

2011: Vice president, EMEA, Guy Carpenter

2007: Reinsurance broker, Nasco Karaoglan France

Describe your career so far and current role. I joined Guy Carpenter in 2011 with the intention of expanding their business in the Middle East and Africa after having spent four years with Nasco in France. I am fluent in Arabic, English and French and have an excellent knowledge of the region’s insurance industry. I hold a law degree from Saint Joseph University in Beirut and Sorbonne University in Paris.

Why did you choose the re/insurance industry? Despite having studied law, I had an opportunity for summer training in a broking firm in Paris thanks to several previous summer jobs in insurance between Lebanon and the GCC countries. I enjoyed the cross-cultural and international market relationships one can establish in a marketplace and especially as I have lived in five different countries so far. The diversity of topics and deal making are also a major attraction.

Do you think the industry is attractive to young

professionals? This industry is attractive for anyone who likes challenges and exposure to different topics, and its social aspect is definitely an attraction for young professionals.

10 | INTELLIGENT INSURER | May 2015

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? Twenty years ago I would have said astronaut, 10 years ago lawyer, today I would rather say stock broker.

Do you think the re/insurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Absolutely, this is probably the only industry where your development depends entirely on your will to develop and climb the ladder and not on pre-set criteria.

What are your aspirations for the future? To be president of Marsh & McLennan Companies.
