Describe your career so far and current role. My role at Amlin involves meeting clients from our North American reinsurance book, building long-term relationships with them to better understand their needs while creating a profitable book of business. I am the point of contact for the brokers in Lloyd’s where we quote the vast majority of our business and Amlin leads a high proportion of the treaties we participate on.

Why did you choose the re/insurance industry? I was attracted to the face-to-face nature of the business as I felt it would provide a varied and interesting way of doing business. Having studied physics, the combination of physical perils with numerical techniques that underpin the reinsurance business appealed to my interests and abilities.

Do you think the industry is attractive to young

professionals? Definitely. It provides a dynamic, profit-focused and sociable marketplace where you can be quickly thrust into the middle of multi-billion pound deals. It’s a worldwide industry with companies

operating across all continents giving varied opportunities to work in different locations, cultures and environments.

Do you think the re/insurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? I have been lucky to work with Amlin’s senior underwriters and management who have challenged me with new levels of responsibility at each stage of my career, and opportunities to progress have been excellent. It’s competitive but there’s always demand for individuals who put themselves forward and demonstrate an ability to understand clients’ needs and conclude the best possible deal for all parties. This healthy competition for the best talent leads to good career

development and progression for those that demonstrate the necessary abilities. Within my peer group, in Amlin and Lloyd’s, I have witnessed many individuals progress rapidly while being given opportunities to set up new business units outside London.

What are your aspirations for the future? I want to continue to build long-lasting relationships with my clients, fostering trust and deepening my understanding of their needs.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I always dreamed of being a professional rugby or cricket player but I realised pretty quickly that wasn’t going to happen! I’m actually very content with what I do—it’s constantly challenging and competitive, I get to travel and it’s something I’m good at.
