2008: Broker, treaty reinsurance, Lycetts Insurance Broker
Why did you choose the re/insurance industry? I went to work for Lycetts broking company in Newcastle and I liked working there as a broker. However, I found that in order to go into the industry properly, you should do it in a city where you can take it further, rather than a regional hub. I thought it was an unknown industry that not many people were going into, especially at a time when many were going into banking. For me, I thought it was better to do something different. It’s a really interesting industry, without the stress of the financial sector but with as many opportunities.
Do you think the industry is attractive to young
professionals? Definitely. But the industry doesn’t market itself well to young professionals, it’s not seen as being quite attractive or high-flying as other industries can appear. However, it’s definitely not true as there are a lot of opportunities for it to be a high-flying industry.
Do you think the re/insurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? I do. I think the biggest opportunities offered aren’t taken enough by young professionals. It offers young individuals to go out and sell different types of insurance. It seems young professionals want
to get on with climbing up the ladder. The real potential is within selling insurance and if you do that well your career will fly.
What are your aspirations for the future? With everything that’s going on at the moment, there are times of great flux ahead of us and I want to be able to utilise the opportunities that will arise and make it work well.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I would do something in the shipping business: selling/broking/ trading. It’s a tangible industry, with many margins. If that fails I would end up on a beach.
