Describe your career so far and current role. As a senior vice president based in Minneapolis for Guy Carpenter’s Healthcare & Life Specialty Practice, I address each client’s specific financial objectives, find reinsurance placement for each programme and manage day-to-day issues such as accounting, claims and contracts. My current group of clients is made up of insurance companies handling medical, long-term disability, personal accident, life catastrophe, and group life/AD&D business. While this is a diverse set of clients, they are tied together by a common focus on risk management, especially since there are a variety of new exposures and market developments as a result of the Affordable Care Act and its impact on the US healthcare industry.


Why did you choose the re/insurance industry? I started off in college as an accounting major but decided that wasn’t the route for me. After investigating several other majors,

I decided to pursue insurance/risk management. I felt this major included a nice mix of the other areas of study that I was interested in, such as finance, economics and accounting. At the same time, it had an element that was unknown, yet intriguing to me—insurance and risk management.


Do you think the industry is attractive to young


professionals? Yes, reinsurance is attractive to young professionals because there are many exciting challenges that go with a career in this industry. As the risk landscape evolves, our industry is constantly pursuing innovative solutions to the emerging issues and perils facing our clients and in turn, the entire global society. For instance, because I am part of Guy Carpenter’s Healthcare & Life Specialty Practice, I get to participate in our team’s mission to be on the cutting edge of developing new reinsurance products and coverages in response to changes in the delivery of healthcare.


Do you think the re/insurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Yes, the industry is great for young professionals. I entered the industry as a college graduate, was matched up with an established broking team and learned the business as I went. I was presented with opportunities and encouraged to take on more responsibility as time went on. Now, I manage my own group of clients. I’ve been very happy with my career progression, and have seen fellow colleagues take similar paths since entering the workforce.


What are your aspirations for the future? I plan to continue as a reinsurance broker in the life, accident and health areas, and expand my client base. As part of that goal, I intend to be an even more active member of Guy Carpenter’s new Healthcare & Life Specialty Practice, as well as help mentor the next generation of young professionals entering our industry.


If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I probably would have pursued a career in banking or gone a completely different direction into nursing and healthcare.
