Name:

Company: Capsicum Re Job:

Partner, property and speciality

Timeline: 2014: Partner—property and speciality, Capsicum Re

2012: Reinsurance broker AJG Re

2011: Reinsurance broker, Execution Re (part of Espirito Santo)

2001: Senior vice president, Guy Carpenter

Describe your career so far and current role. I am responsible for a substantial P&L account and focused on identifying new business opportunities to diversify the team’s income and expand upon its expertise. I have successfully produced business across a wide range of classes, many of which have required very bespoke reinsurance solutions. I continue to seek new opportunities and with my colleagues spearheading an initiative to bring significant new capacity into the insurance sector. I was part of the Execution Re team (part of Espirito Santo)

that completed a management buyout in December 2012 in conjunction with Arthur J. Gallagher, helping to create its treaty platform (AJG Re). This team then transferred to become a partnership within the Capsicum Re Group in October 2014. Prior to Execution Re, I spent 10 years in the US wholesale team

at Guy Carpenter, latterly as senior vice president and developed an expertise in the placement of Florida cat business.

Why did you choose the re/insurance industry? A friend who graduated before me was in the industry working as an underwriter and suggested that I should look into joining.

36 | INTELLIGENT INSURER | May 2015

I went for an interview as an underwriter but having spoken to the assistant underwriter who had been doing the job I would be doing for the last two years I decided that it was probably not the role I was after. The interviewers suggested that I should take a look into broking as they felt that I would be far more interested in that role—and also better suited. I then got a job at Guy Carpenter.

Do you think the industry is attractive to young

professionals? Yes, you can see by the number of applications to every position that there is a far greater awareness of the industry from school and university leavers than when I graduated. There is definitely a better perception of the industry as an exciting place to work.

Do you think the re/insurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Absolutely—it is easy to see how a number of my peers have progressed and the industry is moving in the right direction. I see no reason why those joining today with the right motivation should not have plenty to be optimistic about.

What are your aspirations for the future? Having been part of the original team within Capsicum I am looking forward to working with my colleagues here to see where this company goes. It has been an extremely exciting first year and if we can continue to grow in this vein it will be the most exciting broker to be part of.
