DECOMMISSIONING
PROBLEM-SOLVING decom tool
tility ROV Services (URS) has launched a new mattress recovery tool (MRT) for the oil and gas decommissioning market. The tool has been designed to
U
recover concrete mattresses that have been installed extensively in oil and gas fields to protect subsea piping. URS started developing the tool in response to challenges identified by Decom North Sea around the safe and efficient recovery of some 40,000 concrete mattresses in use throughout the North Sea. The MRT will be deployed from the company’s UTROV system; a remotely operated tool carrier that is suspended from a surface vessel via a load-bearing umbilical. The addition of the MRT to the company’s technology portfolio
comes just a few months after it announced a £6 million investment in new equipment for the energy industry. URS managing
director, Patrick Crawford, says: “Over the past few years our R&D activity has focused on developing solutions that will drive cost efficiency and improve processes. We looked at the challenges facing the sector and considered how our systems could be enhanced to address the challenges and add real value. “With Oil and Gas UK’s
Decommissioning Insight report
recently suggesting that the market is very much an emerging one, we’re delighted to be ahead of the curve and delivering a full package of options to operators.” l

DECOM EXPERT secures project awards
awarded three contracts worth a combined value of more than US$2.5million for decommissioning work in the Norwegian North Sea. The firm’s Stavanger
E
facility will provide cutting services as part of a full severance package covering subsea and topside work. Compared to more traditional approaches, the cutting technology solutions deployed by Proserv can save hours in well severance and plugging, which can lead to major savings in day rates over a campaign. These awards build upon decommissioning successes for the company globally in recent months with around US$8million worth of work secured in Asia Pacific, the UK and Gulf of Mexico.

is the fact we can offer a wide range of integrated services all under one roof – helping to cut costs, reduce complex supply chains and better manage risk through using a single source provider.
“One of the contracts As part of the decommissioning
workscopes, Proserv will provide abrasive cutting, diamond wire cutting, grout removal and dredging services. Henrik Johnson, region president
for Norway, says: “To date, we have cut over 300 wells globally in a variety of challenging conditions and environments, so our track record and the reliability of our equipment was a key factor in securing these awards. Another major attraction
requires specialist engineered solutions to deal with non-standard sizes used in the structure. The complex installation
requires a custom technology solution rather than an ‘off-the-shelf’ package and this is at the core of our expertise.” The contracts come at a time of
strong investment and development with the company currently investing more than US$2million to develop two new multi-string cutting (MSC) systems for well severance campaigns, to meet market demand. l
