We’re smiles better Y
OUNG people in GHA’s communities have plenty reasons to smile – thanks
to projects funded by our Area Committees. The three committees – made up
of tenants - decide how to spend £1.5million each on projects to improve neighbourhoods. The North West Area Committee and Glasgow City Council funded a new fun zone at Temple Walkway, near Anniesland. The site was a mess and a danger to kids. Young pupils from nearby Knightswood Primary School helped pick the new equipment. Children in Earl Street in Scotstoun are also keeping fit and healthy. A £58,000 joint project between the North West Committee and Glasgow City Council funded the new-look play park. Two other play parks in Lincoln Avenue, Knightswood, and in Summerston Acre will open this summer thanks to

the North West Area Committee and partners. The South Committee, along with the Scottish Government and Glasgow Life, is helping young people interested in youth work through a project for 16 to 19-year-olds. The Committee helps to fund the
SWAYED Youth Work programme, which helps young people get training to help them into careers in youth work, arts, sport or play. The 12-month programme
includes part-time paid work placements and training. Since 2009, 55 have completed the course, and 41 of these live in a GHA home. A number of the young people go on to get a job or move on to education. The North East Committee
funded a project to light up the Roystonhill church spire. GHA will be working
with other groups and landlords to illuminate the landmark, which marks its 150th anniversary this year. The move will increase tenants’ pride in the area. The committee also agreed to upgrade steps and paths of 46 closes in Germiston. Derelict land around Croy Place in Royston will also be upgraded, while a parking area and pathways in Riddrie Knowes will also be improved.
