Having an “Upbeat Time” with Gaylord Perry
Upbeat People News Ser- vices, Scottsdale, AZ. ~ While at spring training at Scottsdale Stadium, Az., I stopped to talk to the Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry.
I had a copy of the “Upbeat
Here’s the Upbeat Times with us in Boynton Beach, Florida. We were there in February with our nephew Jason and SueEl-
len...they just got married and bought a home there. They moved to Florida from San Francisco last year. Thanks for the great paper...we read all of it on the plane. ~

Times” with me. I asked him if it would be okay if we had our picture taken together with the paper. I explained to Perry we might have a chance to get it published. He said, “Okay!” Gaylord Perry picked up his fa- mous blue point pen and with- out hesitation he autographed the “Upbeat Times”, and add- ed the year he was inducted into the Hall of Fame,1991. I showed hime the picture of us taken with my “IPhone”, and he grinned and said he liked it. I thought to myself, “Yes!”, and did a thumbs up behind my back. I told him that if we got our picture in the “Upbeat Times”, I would bring him a copy next year at Spring Train-
ing. He sad, “Okay!”
I had such a fun vacation and I was so fortunate to have spent time with the Giant’s icon, Gay- lord Perry.
I was excited and
hopeful that we would get our picture published and maybe make a big hit on the front page of the paper.
Gaylord Perry is a former major league baseball pitcher from1962-1983. During his twenty-two years he had 314 wins and 3,534 strikeouts. He is known for his spit ball pitch, and the first to win the CY Award in both leagues. Winning in 1972 with the Indians and in 1998 with the Padres. His primary team is San Francisco Giants, and he was inducted into the
Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2016, a bronze statue was erected at ATandT park, in his honor. Mr. Perry is a fine gentleman and liked by all.
Some people might say fate, others say being at the right place at the right time. Hon- estly, the best thing I did was to bring the “Upbeat Times” along on my vacation. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the fun and adventure it would bring. It was a moment in time; but a lasting memory that I will always remember and cherish.
Thank you Upbeat Times! Barbara Boro Miles Read more for a piece of his bio on page 10!
