‘Spring Guide #2 & Whats UP! Dental Myths About Aging By Dr. Yolanda Mangrum ~ drmangrum@petalumadental.com

Petaluma, CA. ~ There are many aging and dental care myths out there, but one thing is for sure, your teeth can last a lifetime! It just takes knowl- edge and good dental hab- its! One advantage that baby boomers have, is they drank out of water faucets and drinking foun- tains

that had

fl uoride in them. So many boom- ers have teeth that had a terrifi c start in

life, so let’s

consider how you can keep them by debunking some

common myths about teeth and aging.

Do Teeth Soften with Age? Absolutely not! If your teeth are softening or you are expe- riencing bone loss, this is be- cause of

periodontal disease

and tooth decay, not natural processes from aging. Regu- lar dental care and a good diet helps keep your mouth healthy and teeth strong.

Does Tooth Pain Come

with Age? Often pain perception chang- es with age and a problem that would send a 40-year- old screaming to their dentist might not register with some- one who’s 75. So for older patients, waiting until it really hurts could lead to tooth loss and costly reconstructive work. If you are experiencing any de- gree of tooth pain or sensitivity at any age, don’t wait! Do You Stop Getting Cavities? Even with better oral educa- tion and better access to dental care, it’s important to remem- ber cavities are not just a child- hood problem. Everyone, no matter their age, should brush twice a day and fl oss at least once to prevent cavities. Since the gums do tend to recede as

we age, exposing softer parts of the tooth called dentin, good oral hygiene becomes especial- ly important to prevent deep cavities.

Does Age Always Mean Den- tures? Plenty of people do not need dentures when they are older. Seniors sometimes experience

dental

complications from extra medications they take and other factors that

come

along with age, such as dry mouth, but a good dental

care regimen and regular den- tal visits can prevent the need for expensive dental restora- tions and repairs, like dentures or dental implants.

boring town of Corte Madera, which continues to this day. Refl ecting on his life, Earl

wouldn’t trade his military ex- periences “for anything.”

It

has taken its toll with shrapnel throughout his body (he beeps at airports) and impaired hear- ing, but the war also made him the person he is today at age 95. He loves this country despite its imperfections. Marilyn died in 2009, but Earl is surrounded by nieces, nephews, and local friends of all ages who, along with his faith, keep him active- ly engaged in life.
