Words are like seeds ...they’re everywhere! Plant a word and you might see a harvest down the road...somewhere anyway, or not. But I know that I am infl uenced by words. I really enjoy philosophy, logic, psy- chology, history, science, mu- sic, writing, music and art as well as dozens and dozens of other subjects that involve the use of language and words. Art especially has a fondness to my heart. A line is a word to me. It speaks with a tone of limitless possibilities. I found an understanding

as a young boy competing in a pumpkin drawing contest. It was the meaning of communi- cation to me in an of and way. I drew what I thought was a

great pumpkin. I waited for the results and knew I just might fi nally win. (it was my 3rd year trying) But many weeks later the results were in. I went to look where the winners would be displayed. I won! Well... kind of....It was an honorable mention, but it came with no ribbon. Why I wondered? I went home that day and asked my mom what it meant. I think I was in third grade. It turns out that I had possibilities of being an artist and there was always next year. Wow, I thought, I came close. Time went by and I found myself in sixth grade and was at summer school and we all had to draw an apple as an assignment in the summer art class. Aſt er the teacher looked at my piece and others walk- ing around he says to me, “I really don’t think art is for you Paul” I was a bit taken back. I tried hard to make it look like an apple. He had made me re-draw it several times. But I kept drawing. I know I was go- ing to be an artist. I did posi- tive self talk that no-one would tell me I couldn’t do it. As I think back now, why would the teacher have even said that? Was he pushing me indirectly?

A science teacher tells his class, “Oxygen is a must for breathing and life. It was discovered in 1773.” A student responds, “Thank goodness I was born after 1773! Otherwise I would have died without it.”

A football coach walked into the locker room before a game, looked over to his star player and said, “I’m not supposed to let you play since you failed math, but we need you in there. So what I have to do is ask you a math question, and if you get it right, you can play.” The player agreed, and the coach looked into his eyes intently and asks, “Okay, now con- centrate... what is two plus two?” The player thought for a moment and then he answered, “4?” “Did you say 4?!?” the coach exclaimed, excited that he got it right. At

that, all the other players on the team began screaming, “Come on coach, give him

another chance!”
