Sharjah has a lot to offer visitors looking for a combination of historic charm, cultural pursuits and interesting activities. Brimming with stun- ning galleries, heritage centres and artistic spaces, Sharjah has fast been carving out a name as something of a cultural capital. Located in a historic stretch of the city, Shar-

jah Heritage Area is home to a host of cultural hotspots, including Sharjah Heritage Museum and Sharjah Art Museum. It is also the location for hugely successful contemporary art show- case, the Sharjah Biennial. Elsewhere in the emirate, the Arabian Wild-

life Centre boasts more than 100 animal species, plus a mix of beautiful flora and fauna. Shop- ping enthusiasts will love exploring the famous Blue Souk, also known as Central Market, which offers everything from jewellery to traditional ceramics. While the Al Qasba waterfront area is a popular spot for a stroll, with its Eye of the Emirates Ferris wheel and man-made canal adding to the city’s offering.

Annual events include the nine-day Sharjah

Light Festival, when the emirate’s landmarks are transformed into colourful canvases, the Sharjah International Automobile Show, which attracts more than 75,000 vehicle enthusiasts to the Expo Centre, and the Sharjah Grand Prix, the final event of the powerboat season. Sharjah also has a host of exciting projects

in the pipeline, including Al Montazah Amuse- ment and Water Park, the Al Badayer Desert Camp resort and Sir Bu Nuair Island. The latter is a 16-square-kilometre island located 80 kilo- metres off the UAE coastline. It will host a luxury five-star resort, camping village, amphitheatre, harbour, airport and retail spaces. Meanwhile, the emirate’s green credentials

will be given a boost by the Kalba Eco-Tour- ism Project on the emirate’s east coast where mangrove kayaking, scuba diving and mountain biking will make for a fantastic array of activities. In April 2016, ‘Sharjah Day’ came to London

in an attempt to woo foreign investors to the emirate. The event formed part of a programme of activities by Sharjah Investment and Develop- ment Authority (Shurooq) to broaden its reach by setting up a permanent office in the UK capi- tal, launching the Invest in Sharjah campaign and announcing plans to attract more than 10 million tourists by 2021. Sharjah is also targeting the Far East market by offering visas on arrival to Chinese citizens and adding more flights between the two destinations.
