“We believe the expo will contribute greatly towards future thinking

and progress, strengthening the UAE’s role as the epicentre that brings together diverse people and ideas from around the world”

“So we see our mission at Expo 2020 Dubai

as nothing less than a moral obligation to ensure that these touch points of education and inspira- tion are meaningful, lasting and relevant to the 25 million visits we hope to attract.” The Sustainability Pavilion is planned to

take much of its energy and water needs from the sun and atmosphere, one of the world’s first large-scale applications of the technology. Andrew Whalley, Deputy Chairman of

UK-based Grimshaw Architects, who have been contracted to build the impressive new structure, says its design draws inspiration from nature’s processes such as photosynthe- sis, capturing energy from sunlight and fresh water from the humid air.

He says: “We want the pavilion to be an

example of what really can be done in even the harsh environment of the desert. We will use cutting-edge technologies that will be tomor- row’s everyday realities.”

BUILDING A CONNECTION Emirates airline, as Expo 2020 Dubai’s premier partner and a licensed ticket reseller, will be pivotal to the event’s success. The airline carried 51.9 million passengers in 2015-16 and is on track to carry 70 million passengers by 2020. It is also at the heart of ensuring that going forward, the UAE builds on its strength as a global interconnected hub. His High- ness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum,

Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group, describes the upcoming expo as a “momentous milestone” for Dubai and the wider region. He says: “We believe our strong global

brand and marketing efforts, as well as our extensive route network to more than 150 destinations, positions us to support Expo 2020 Dubai in attracting 25 million visitors, 70 percent of whom are expected to travel internationally to visit the event. “We believe the expo will contribute

greatly towards future thinking and progress, strengthening the UAE’s role as the epicentre that brings together diverse people and ideas from around the world.

“Emirates wants to be the enabler that

brings together millions of people to visit and participate, and become engaged, inspired and empowered by the event.” Expo 2020 Dubai’s legacy will have posi-

tive repercussions for tourism as well, explains Gerald Lawless, Chairman of the World Travel and Tourism Council and Head of Tourism and Hospitality at Dubai Holding. “Dubai had already earned itself an inter-

national reputation as a tourist destination, but to stay on the map means you have to keep evolving, developing and getting better. “2020 gives us a new foundation from which

to develop so that tourism levels will continue to increase,” Lawless says.
