NEXT GENERATION PHARMACY AUTOMATION - THE SYNMED® SYSTEM

Synergy Medical, an expert manufacturer of automated pharmacy systems, is introducing its new SynMed® system for preparing and dispensing solid oral medications in blister packs. This revolutionary automation is designed to help pharmacists quickly and safely prepare patients’ medication by accurately dispensing hundreds of different tablet types into a range of blister pack formats.

The new SynMed system, which is currently being successfully used in fi ve major community pharmacy hubs in the UK can dispense 400 different types of medication, (98 percent of all solid oral medication typically used) into blister packs. The system can fi ll up to 12 blisters packs simultaneously and while it is fi lling, the pharmacy technician can be sealing packs and preparing external medication for the next tray, ensuring continuous production.

With a SynMed system, just one technician can safely prepare prescriptions in 200 packs every eight- hour shift or 1000 packs and more per week, in a fraction of the time it would take to complete this task manually. This level of precision and effi ciency means that pharmacies can confi dently take on new prescription fulfi lment contracts and increase production capacity, whilst freeing up pharmacists for more patient-focused activities such as Medicines Use Reviews and patient training.

Michel Guerra, Vice President, Sales and Business Development Europe at Synergy Medical commented: “Dispensing several medications into one blister pack can be very time consuming if performed manually and the accuracy can vary depending on the level of fatigue, skill and experience of the technician. The SynMed system overcomes these issues and is like having

access to a team of expert pharmacy technicians as the system can accurately dispense medication in 1000 packs and more per week with just one technician overseeing it.”

Dara O’Malley, owner of the Omnicare Pharmacy in Edinburgh, one of the UK pharmacies that has just purchased a SynMed system stated: “We had spent a number of years looking to invest in a system that would reduce both the labour burden and dispensing error risk involved with dosette production. After meeting Michel and his team at Synergy medical, we were impressed with their innovative approach and professionalism and it wasn’t long before we were working together at rolling out the project along with our IT provider Positive Solutions.”

O’Malley added: “We are currently at the fi nal stage of the rollout where the system will be running production for eight sites. Overall we are delighted with our investment, the Synmed robot and team at Synergy Medical has delivered against all our expectations.”

The SynMed system has been designed to precisely prepare multi-dose blister packs from all

the leading pack manufacturers, allowing pharmacists the fl exibility to dispense into 32 different types of commonly used blister packs. The system also offers the fl exibility to change drugs and/or providers rapidly and safely at the pharmacy with its easy to calibrate containers and also allows personalisation with photos of patients and medications on the blister pack. The level of detail on the packs ensures that pharmacists and health care providers can quickly and easily check that they are giving the right patient, the right medication at the right time.

The new SynMed system now includes software and interface compatibility with some UK pharmacy systems, as well as 2D bar code tracking. This eliminates prescription reading and dispensing errors, as well as provides fully traceable information. Archived results can be reviewed at any time and their use is ideal in pharmacies wanting to monitor and report incidence of medication errors and will contribute to improving patient safety.
