Texas Tech University System’s Board
of Regents voted February 24 to name the school’s Equestrian Center indoor arena as the Kris Wilson Fearless Champion Arena. Wil- son, who passed away last September, created the first ranch horse team at Tech, and the In- tercollegiate Ranch Horse Team Program grew to include teams from 17 other universities.
Texas A&M University’s Stock Horse
Team won the collegiate championship at the Stock Horse of Texas February 24-26 event in Abilene. Member Morgan Moreno was awarded the Dr. Josie Coverdale Memorial Scholarship at that time, in memory of the great professor and horsewoman lost last year.
APHA members donated generously to
support 3 APHA initiatives during the APHA convention held February 24-27 Irving. Mem- bers generously donated over $66,000, a 215% increase over gifts from the 2016 Convention.
Greater Houston QHA kicked of its
show year with an All-Breed/PAC Open Show February 25. Grand champion halter horses in- cluded Dunn In Style (Stallion/Eliese Wolff), Hour Time To Shine (Gelding/Sandy Gal- loway), and Supernatural Image (Mare/Sandy Sullivan). HP champions were Laynie Strick- hausen (WT-13&U/GVG Shes Got Legs), Laurie Marie Robbins (WT-14&O/I Aint Your Mister), Lana Johnston (WT-19&O/Toby), Kenede Wagner (WTL-13&U/Zips Midnight Dude), Sophia Smith (WTL-14-18/Face It Im Famous), and Kathy Lee (WTL/Terrific Lee Hot). Pinto Horse Assoc of NM hosted its first
2017 training show on February 26. HP cham- pions were Suella Boyd (Open/Special Ap- pearance), Kansas Haddock (Youth/Saint Zip), Christy Miller Harding (WT-19&O/JS Mag- nums Blu Shadow), and Tori Shauger (Mini- Pony/Jesse). The NCHA Mercuria Non-Pro Finals
was held March 4 during the HLSR. Lauren Middleton, Weatherford, TX, was winner, with 224 points on Sweet Reyvenge. April Widman, also of Weatherford, took reserve with 222 on Woodys Baby. Kelsey Conn’s 219.5 on Boon Tooth earned third place.
Texas A&M University in College Sta-
tion welcomed the Texas A&M Qatar Leader- ship Exchange students March 7, to the Department of Animal Science Equestrian Center. Members of the group saw a Stock Horse demonstration, learned to throw a rope, and got to ride some great schooling horses. Members of the Stock Horse Team, Eventing Team, and Horsemen’s Association, along with TAMU undergraduate teaching assistants for ANSC-311 helped provide the opportunity to the visiting Aggies.
The American Paint Horse Foundation,
the philanthropic arm of APHA, recently re- ceived a $125,000 grant from the Amon G. Carter Foundation to support their 2017-2018 Capital Campaign. The grant will fund the restoration and relocation of the four large bronze statues depicting Paint Horses that stood
