REDUCING COST AND UNCERTAINTY WITH LIDAR


Ecofys supports successful wind measurement campaign for 150MW wind farm


One of the Netherland’s largest windfarms, De Drentse Monden Oostermoer, consists of 45 wind turbines and is being developed in the province of Drenthe in the North East of the country.


PROJECT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT


Ecofys WTTS, a subsidiary of Navigant, was responsible for the project management of the wind measurement campaign for the largest part of the project. The company supported the developers in designing the wind measurement strategy, aiming to find the optimal balance between reducing the uncertainty in the wind resource assessment and simultaneously limiting the costs for the wind measurement campaign.


PROJECT DETAIL


The wind measurements were performed over the course of two years using two ZephIR 300 wind lidars manufactured by ZephIR Lidar and owned by Raedthuys Windenergie – one of the three wind farm developers. Ecofys WTTS verified both Lidars against an IEC compliant met mast before and after the wind measurement campaign in order to confirm their suitability for wind measurements as a replacement to traditional cup anemometers.

regime at several hub height levels, which ranged from 100 metres to more than 140 metres. Moreover a second ZephIR 300 was used to investigate the wind speed gradient across the large site and further decrease the horizontal extrapolation uncertainty.

measurements reduced the uncertainty of the long-term wind climate and increased the predicted energy yield. The precision of the measurement data, and thus the identified higher predicted annual energy yield, are vital and valuable insights for the financing of the wind farm in this case, but importantly wind farms in general.
