GRUNION RUN 2017 For those not familiar, grunion is a species of fish that leaves the water at night to spawn on beaches during the spring and summer months through- out Southern California. For four con- secutive nights beginning on the nights of the full and new moons, spawning occurs after high tides and continues for several hours. Peak spawning is from late March to early June. During the open season (March, June, July, August, and September), a California fishing license is required for those 16 years and older. Grunion may be taken by hand only — no holes may be dug in the beach to entrap them. Happy hunting!

WHEN: Thursday, March 30, 11:40 p.m. to 1:40 a.m. Varying days and times through the end of August. WHERE: All San Diego Beaches. wildlife.ca.gov/fishing/ocean/grunion
