and finally reached shore and passed out. When he awoke, he scrambled over a sand dune and there was a cabin with smoke coming out of the chimney. He crawled up to the cabin and got to the front door and opened it...on the wall was a picture of General Rommel, it was a German outpost! There was no-one around so
he managed to find some tins of tomato juice and opened them with a German bayonet. He realized he needed some clothes and found some German work clothes and then lay down to rest. A short time later he heard a vehicle pull up and he thought “That’s it, I’m in for it now.” The door opened and in came a British soldier. The Brit saw this fellow
in a German outfit and went for his pistol, Jack rushed by him and encountered a burly British sergeant with a rifle. Jack managed a quick “I’m Canadian, don’t shoot”. The sergeant gave him a critical once over and asked “Are you hungry lad?” then cooked him up some food. Apparently, the Germans had pulled out just minutes before Jack arrived, luck was with him on that day! Jack received a
Distinguished Service Order and a Distinguished Flying Cross and bar. He lives with his wife of seventy-three years (Norma), Jack will be ninety-seven this summer. They live at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. If you wish to make a
