BARRYMORES continued from page 51

York in March of 1981 making the pitch for the band. “Premier Management said they had this new Irish Band they wanted to bring in”, she told me. “This was just before Rolling Stone magazine did an article comparing them to the Beatles. We settled on $750 U.S. Our records show 220 people showed up.” That was slightly below capacity, even at $5 a ticket! Then there is the legend of Tina

Turner. In the sixties The Ike and Tina Turner Revue often came through Ottawa, selling out clubs with their high octane R&B revue. But in 1983 she was on the comeback trail after leaving Ike and slipping into the “whatever-happened-to” bin. Barrymore’s booked her for 4 shows, and they bombed, badly, although Sherry says it remains one of her favourite shows of all time. About six months later Tina released “Private Dancer”, and the rest is history. The 80s was the perfect storm

for Barrymore’s. Record companies were still pouring lots of money into promoting and touring their new artists. CHEZ-FM and other local radio stations were generous with their support, and music lovers were open to hearing new and established artists from all genres of music. You also had VJ Jeff Green and his in-house video system that played everything from cult films to the latest video hits from MTV. The music played 6 nights a week. Local bands featured prominently, either as opening acts getting “$50 and a case of beer”, laughs Sherry, or headlining on their own and attracting some big crowds. Artists loved the sound and the ambience, and the bills were, mostly, getting paid. Even the washrooms were renovated! But then came the 90’s. The

Canadian dollar sank, the money from record companies for touring and promotion started to dry up.
