BODIAM CASTLE Tourist Profile 

On the edge of 1066 country lies the impressive National Trust-run Bodiam Castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex.

The remains of Battle Abbey are, to

some degree, the lasting monument to those who died and, according to 12th century sources, the high altar of the church marked the spot where Harold was killed. It might seem like an appropriate

gesture by the victor to his conquered foe, but records suggest that William was actually under Papal pressure to do so.

1066 COUNTRY WALKING FESTIVAL

1066 Country Marketing have announced the next walking festival will take place during May 13 – 21, 2017. This walking festival for 1066 Country will feature walks to suit all ages and abilities over the 1066 area. The 1066 Walking Festival will show just how much fun walking can be alongside the healthy aspects. Over the festival there will be long and short walks to suit all tastes and fitness

levels. Many of these will be free of charge, or by donation request. A festival of Morris and other traditional dance with visiting teams from all over England and Europe. Procession on Bank Holiday Monday with music, dance, singing and street entertainment. www.visit1066country.com/whats-on/events/1066-walking-festival

Described as “a glimpse of Medieval splendour” it is a chance to see the original wooden portcullis and there is enough left of the ruins inside its imposing walls to paint a picture of life in the 14th century. The trust’s website boasts:

“Windows where arrows were once shot, a tower that was once a look-out and ruins that were once walked upon by knights; this is a place where you can relive your childhood memories and let your imagination run riot.” There are activities right through

the year at Bodiam but why not try afternoon tea on Easter Sunday, April 16 at 3.30pm www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ bodiam-castle Bodiam, near Robertsbridge, East Sussex, TN32 5UA 01580 830196
