OUR CHALLENGE

BHS is succeeding in preparing students locally to compete globally. The faculty creates opportunities for students to study international problems alongside their peers in foreign countries to reach collaborative solutions. These international projects, and even a rigorous academic curriculum on campus, are not enough to keep pace with the changes in a rapidly evolving world.

Today there is a new challenge that results from a lack of workers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math; what has become commonly known as ‘STEM’. In fact, in the last few years a STEM education that focuses purposefully on women has taken the international spotlight. Around the world, girls who obtain a STEM education not only prosper more than those who have never learned about STEM topics, but they also improve their communities by providing new technology, alongside economic and educational opportunities.

Further, research also suggests that single-sex schools are ideal places for girls’ STEM education. When rating their computer skills, graduates of independent girls’ schools consider themselves strong students 38% more often than their co-ed peers, and girls’ school alumnae rate themselves great at math 38% more often than girls in co-ed schools.

Thanks to a forward-thinking Board of Trustees and a dedicated, creative staff, the STEM initiative is now reaching Bermuda with a clear focus and intent. The Board and faculty understand that BHS offers the perfect environment to promote science, technology, engineering and math to prepare female leaders for increasing opportunities in these fields.

Students taking business studies and economics courses, enhanced by science and technology disciplines, have a tremendous advantage as they look ahead to college and careers. Bermuda has a great need for business and finance majors to lead the island’s re-insurance, accounting, and banking institutions, as well as entrepreneurs and innovators who are equipped to respond to the needs of a rapidly changing global economy.

In addition, integrating the arts encourages students to draw upon imagination, creative thinking, and collaboration when approaching problem-solving. Fresh learning modules in this area include: Design Technology, Computer Music, Digital Arts, App Design, and Wearable Technology. Girls who are immersed in “Design Thinking” learn creative ways to solve problems while expanding their interest in the engineering side of the arts.

As an academic leader in Bermuda and a force for change on the island, BHS envisions a campus where future leaders in science, business, technology, and the arts acquire the necessary critical thinking skills and dynamic problem-solving that will catapult them into positions of leadership in all these areas.
