How do women perform as managers? Women in Business and Management Gaining Momentum [2015 report ] shows the following:
Female
Entry at manager level Managers/Directors Senior managers Executive Directors
Women in trade unions
How do they perform? In EU countries womens participation in TUs has gone up. But it is not true in India. A majority of women are passive members .[just paying the subscription and stay away from activities]. The second category consists of women who are better -that is they participate in lunch meetings etc. The third category consists of members who are active [who actively participate in all the activities of the union such as demonstrations, dharnas, rallies courting arrest..] But very few women are coming under the third category. Patriarchal attitude that public space is meant for men, family responsibility, timing of union meetings, character assassination are some of the obstacles which women face when they participate in TU activities. However, in Employers Association 22.9% are women. G 20 countries survey[2015] shows for these women top issues are 1.Work-family conflict 2.Equal pay and 3 sexual harassment.
Political participation:
33% reservation for women in the assemblies and the parliament continues to be a dream. In the 1952 Lok Sabha 4.4% were women members. Now it has gone up to 11%. SAARC report shows that women in the local bodies have performed well. Women take up basic amenities issues in their panchayats. Pati panchayats is on the decline since awareness has been created among the women and special training programs have been conducted to make them understand their responsibilities. Many women do not come forward to be active in politics, due to fear of character assassination. Even in developed countries women politicians are not taken seriously. Take for example, Hillary Clinton. Her campaign and the media coverage was not about the issues she spoke but more about her attire, Hence a woman is first looked as as a woman and only then her career is spoken of. This is true of all politicians across the globe.
Violence against women
Violence against women has taken new forms with the improvement in technology .Morphing is used to blackmail women. Many young girls/women unable to withstand the pressure have committed suicide. Of late, boys/men killing or slashing or defacing girls/women for

unrequited love is on the increase. Similarly irrespective of the age women are raped and subjected to sexual assault. Gang rape is on the increase. Despite stringent laws the perpetrators manage to escape using the loopholes in the law. Many rape victims commit suicide due to stigma. Increasing consumerism and objectifying women as commodities which are reiterated by print, audio and visual media have been responsible for such an escalation of crimes against women. Honour killing has become a menace leading to loss of young lives.
The BJP government s policies are aggravating the situation. They try to control the daily lives. Starting from what one should eat, to where a woman can go, with whom, at what time, is under scanner. What you should wear is decided by them. Similarly whom you should marry, how many children you can have are dictated by them. And more recently, in the name of demonetisation, they decide how much you should spend everyday too. The so called cultural policemen with their regressive ideology, instead of helping women to move forward, are taking them back to dark ages, confining them within the four walls. The state sponsored violence is increasing affecting the lives of women in states like J&K. Human rights violations are increasing by the day and might is right is the attitude of the govt. The ruling party is trying to scuttle the protesting voices by calling them anti nationals and unpatriotic. If you are not with me you are with the enemy is the fascist attitude of the government today.
To sum up the impact of globalisation on people in general and women in particular it can be said that, Education is commercialised, Commerce is vulgarised, Religion is politicised, Politics is criminalised, Criminals are glorified, Women are commodified, Children are labourised, and the Society is scandalised.
In this background, it is important for us to be united, to protect our hard fought freedom, and rights. We should never let anyone divide us on the basis of caste/religion /language/ethnicity state etc. It is important to resist any attempt that denies our existence with dignity. Let us be United to save Unity in Diversity.♦
