Impact of
Globalisation on Women G
Prof. R. Chandra
lobalisation is not something new. When India was colonised by Britain for over two centuries, our resources and wealth were looted by the British Imperialism. We could not decide what to produce, how much to produce, where to sell and at what price etc. All the important economic and political decisions were taken by Britain. But globalisation which was introduced in 1991 as New economic policy has a different agenda. This is hailed as one which has unified the world and the whole world has become a village. It is described as something that leads to a borderless world. Globalisation is a hegemonic process led by economically and militarily powerful rich countries. According to Samir Amin, Globalisation rests on five monopolies that locates with G7 countries:monopoly of technology, finance, market, media and weapons of mass destruction. The most important feature of globalisation today is the dominance of finance capital. MNCs have been operating in India for a long time. They used to start the units here, hire people and produce whatever they wanted and send the profits to the mother companies. Under the neoliberal regime, MNCs don t like the hard route of building factories create employment etc. Instead, they prefer a short route that is speculation. They play in the stock market and make huge gains. There are no restrictions and since the stock markets operate round the clock, [When Japan,s market closes, New York markets starts and so on..] As a result of trillions dollars are exchanged within a very short time. Capital moves in any direction, profit being its sole motive. Hence flight of capital occurs with such speed as never heard of before. Global capital is vicious and dangerous. Trade in finance is said to be 50 times more than trade in goods.
What have we achieved in the two and half decades of globalisation? India is the fastest growing economy with 2.1 trillion dollars of National income, No I in the production of tea, milk, sugar, films etc., No.II in two-wheeler production, cotton, tobacco production and so on. India is a Nuclear power today., 40% of Doctors, 36% of Engineers in Microsoft, 34% of engineers in U.S.A are Indians. Clinton nad Obama have advisers who are Indians . We have launched satellite in space successfully.
