50 Years of Specialist Holidays
In 2016 Balkan Holidays London are celebrating our 50th Anniversary - That’s 50 years of the very best holidays to Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro.
Back in 1966 Bulgaria was a communist country and was behind what was then called the ‘Iron Curtain’. However, the Bulgarian government could see the huge potential this beautiful country had with its 250 miles of coastline, sandy beaches plus mountain ranges with ski resorts that were perfect for skiers from the UK. So in September 1966 the company was formed and promotions began to show travel agents the natural beauty of Bulgaria. It wasn’t long before we were operating charter flights from various UK airports including Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester, all of which still operate today.
In the early days our customers would be given restaurants vouchers to spend in the resort, these were included in the price of their holiday, this was something only Balkan Holidays offered and we like to think these were the first all- inclusive holidays! In the early nineties Bulgaria became a very popular holiday destination and back then the only way for agents to book with us was on the telephone or viewdata. When we launched a brochure there was so much demand our phone and viewdata lines would be constantly engaged meaning many agents just couldn’t contact us to make a booking. Drastic action was required and agents travelled to our office in London from different parts of the UK, some from as far away as Scotland. These days most agents use our excellent agents website, phone bookings and viewdata are still available although if any agents would like to visit our offices you would be most welcome!
Today, after 50 years, Balkan Holidays continue to be the leading tour operator to Bulgaria. We operate charter flights from 17 UK airports to Bourgas, Varna and Sofia. We fly predominantly with BH Air (Balkan Holidays Air) and our group owns hotels in Sunny Beach, Bansko, Bulgaria’s ultra modern ski resort plus hotels in other countries.
Reaching our 50 years anniversary is a huge achievement and we will be around for at least another 50 years offering the widest choice of quality holidays to Bulgaria and other countries across the Balkan region of Europe - We would like to thank you, our travel agent partners, for all the fantastic support you have given Balkan Holidays and we look forward to working with you all for the next fifty years!
