Norwegian Cruise Line plans to showcase Norwegian Jade to as many agents as possible when it returns to the UK in May next year, claiming the vessel will be better than when it launched.

The 2,400-passenger ship

entered service in 2006 and next year will return to sailing from the UK for the first time since 2008. Prior to sailing from Southampton, the ship will undergo a dramatic transformation as part of NCL's $400 million Norwegian Edge refurbishment programme. It will be the last of nine ships

to have a refurbishment as part of the programme. The line’s vice-president

of international business development, Francis Riley, said: “We want customers to think they are on an inaugural sailing. The ships are coming out of drydock looking better than when they

were launched.” Jade will split its time next summer between Southampton and Hamburg, sailing a selection

NORWEGIAN JADE: Sails from UK next year for the first time since 2008

“We want customers to think they are on an inaugural sailing”

of western Europe and Norwegian fjords itineraries. For this summer, NCL admits the US market has dipped as customers put off travelling to Europe due to security concerns and opt to sail closer to home. But Nick Wilkinson, general manager for northern Europe, said he was not concerned that

extra capacity for the UK will spur discounting. “More partners are rewarding agents based on retention of margin rather than giving margins away,” he said. “There’s a level of maturity and discounting that is not as rampant as it was.” Wilkinson added that agents are also being more creative, taking cruise-only and adding land, rail and flight options. “We cannot just keep chasing the

same customers,” he said. “We have to get new clients, particularly

from land-based holidays.” ncl.co.uk
