Publisher's letter I

s it possible that 10 years can fl y by in the blink of an eye? It must be because I am celebrating 10 years of publishing Natural Nutmeg Magazine (our sister magazine to Essential Living Maine Magazine) in 2017 and it feels like it was just yesterday! In the spring of 2007, I started Natural Nutmeg because I was so passionate about using natural rem- edies for healthcare and I believed Connecticut residents needed a print resource for a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to bring together holistic practi- tioners with readers who were searching for these types of treatments and

therapies. My vision was for Natural Nutmeg to become THE local resource in Connecticut for natural medicine, nutrition, fi tness, green living, travel and personal development. And this year, we’ll be celebrating 3 years of publishing Essential Living Maine!

There were many challenges along the way and sometimes I wondered if I’d made the right decision to start my own business. I have to admit, there were many days that I wanted to give up. I’m sure my struggles are no different than most publishers – will there be enough revenue to maintain and expand the business, will our readers keep picking up the magazine and supporting our advertisers, and how can we keep coming up with unique and interesting content?

But the one thing that has kept me going all these years is you…our reader. The story

you’ll read below in Lynda’s Editor’s Note is EXACTLY why I started these magazines. So my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to you, my loyal reader, whether you’ve been read- ing for 10 years or 1 month. I’m so grateful that I didn’t give up. I’m hoping for another 10 years and together we can reach multitudes of people and build communities where everyone leads a healthy, active, sustainable lifestyle in peace and happiness.

H

ow was your holiday season? Did you give instead of just receiving? Did you do something to help someone else? Maybe you did, but you just don’t know the impact you made.

I’d like to share a story with you to show how a small act of kindness can come back to reward you.

I attended a winter solstice meditation event on December 21st. While we were introducing ourselves early in the evening, I mentioned I was the

Marketing Director for Essential Living Maine magazine. This woman piped up and said she loved the magazine. When we were talking afterward I found out she had recently moved into a 55 and older facility in Westbrook. I asked her where she picked up the magazine and she said, "Well, that's the craziest thing. I have had a really rough couple of months and on one of my worst days I had a knock at my door and a lovely woman handed me a gift bag that had your magazine and a lot of other things like crackers, cookies, etc. in it."

At that moment I realized that I had helped put that bag together about a month pre- vious through the Westbrook Women's Group I belong to. We had put together approxi- mately 50 bags to be handed out at random to the residents at the various elderly housing facilities in Westbrook. I was almost in tears as I told her, "I helped put that bag together for you! You have no idea how much what you just said means to me! It all just came around full circle!” When I was putting the magazines in the bags I had thought, “Please God, let at least one person be affected by this magazine.”

She said, "Receiving that gift that day made a huge difference to me and let me know that people do still care."

I received the most wonderful gift of all this Christmas. God gave me the ability to see the impact I made from a gesture that only cost a small fraction of my time. So, please remember that you may not know how much the acts you perform will affect other people or how many people you will impact, but it will be returned to you many times over.
