Quiz raises over £1,000 for Halesworth Festive Lights

Halesworth & District Museum

THE Museum was out and about in November, providing talks and updates for local groups.

At our

VOLuNTEERS from Lovewell Blake organised on behalf of Halesworth Event Management, a fund raising quiz at Chinny’s Sports Bar to raise funds for Halesworth Festive Lights. The quiz was a huge success

with more than 130 people taking part spread over 24 teams. A raffle and silent auction was held on the night which helped to take the funds raised to £1,019.48.

A big thank you to all those

who took part and to all the individuals and businesses who kindly donated prizes. Many thanks to Lovewell

Blake for sponsoring the event and to everyone who helped make this a success. Congratulations to the winning team ‘Just Crackers’ as pictured above. A date for the next quiz will be announced in the spring.

Annual Public Meeting we had an opportunity to review our year and learn more about the pedestrianisation of Halesworth Thoroughfare which had taken place 25 years ago that month. Brian Howard, our Treasurer, provided talks about the Wissett Hoard and the Bulcamp Workhouse for the Time Out Group at the Library, for the Halesworth Tourism Group and for the Blyth Spirits. It is always good to have an opportunity to talk about the Museum’s work to people who perhaps haven’t visited us up at the Railway Station yet. A major new exhibition is in preparation which will open at the Museum in the New Year. Over the centuries, many schools have operated in Halesworth and the surrounding district. The exhibition will be an opportunity to find out where these schools were, when they operated, and the sort of education they provided. The ‘Punishment Books’ certainly describe a very different approach to schooling from the methods of today. Many of our volunteers are

people who have retired and enjoy spending their increased leisure time in interesting work for the Museum. However, not all our volunteers fall into this category. One of our newest volunteers fits helping at the Museum around her work schedule, and another, Jack Sayer, helped out at the Museum during his summer break from university. Jack recently graduated, and applied for a job for which we provided a reference. We were delighted to learn that Jack was successful and will be joining English Heritage. So there are plenty of ways to contribute to the Museum and lots of different rewards in doing so. Come and see us to find out more.

Finally, the Museum will be

closing for the holiday season on December 10th. We wish all our friends and visitors the very best for the festive season and look forward to welcoming you back to the Museum from January 17th.

Halesworth Area Community Transport

A VERY Happy Christmas to all our passengers, and the Day Centre also to our clients who hire our buses. Please note those passengers

who live in the Lodge Lane area in Holton, the building work being carried out near the village hall, is causing us loss of time with the delivery of building materials and unloading them, not to mention the traffic lights. So for the time being, we are

not calling in Lodge Lane, or Lower Park Walk. If you care to wait in Bungay

Road opposite the bus shelter we can pick you up there. use the HOPPA to the full for

your shopping, our bus buddies are there to help, but watch the weight of your trollies! David (Chair)
