Service celebrates a ‘journey of life’

SNODLAND Town Active Retire- ment Association (STARA) organ- ised a countywide "Service of Thanksgiving for Retirement" at Rochester Cathedral. The annual event for the 80-plus

ARAs in Kent, which come under the KentARA umbrella, is held ei- ther at Canterbury or Rochester. Alan Champion, chairman of the organising committee and vice- chairman of STARA, explained: "As Snodland stands on a crossing point of the RiverMedway used by pilgrims on route from London to Canterbury, the theme of this year's service was ‘The journey of life’. The hymns, address and choral items all reflected this theme.” More than 500 ARA members at- tended the service, along with a

number of dignitaries and spon- sors, including Gloria Opera, Deputy Mayor of Medway Amanda Cotterell OBE, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Medway and Supt Phil Hibben, Deputy Commissioner of Police. The service was organised and

the address was given by the Rev Hugh Broadbent, Rector of Snod- land, assisted by the Rev Sue Brooks, associate rector. Readings were made by STARA members, Paul Beaney, Keith Holdstock and June Wright. The organ was played byAndrew Ashbee who has played the organ at Christ Church, Snodland, for 60 years. The West Malling Commu- nity Choir, led by Rupert Bond pro- vided the music.

Knitting in remembrance

MEMBERS of Snodland Women’s Club were knitting poppies and wreaths from July, preparing forRemembranceSunday to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. The club, part of the National Association ofWomen’s Clubs, was formed 18 months ago. Chairman Sally Nunn explained that the club had been growing steadily, members enjoyed the company and many friendships had been formed. “Speakers have included the London Fire Brigade and there have

been demonstrations on Indian cooking, cake-decorating, card-mak- ing and flower-arranging,” she said. "We also enjoyed visits to Hastings for a fish and chip lunch with a

stroll along the prom and cream teas at Hadlow College with the op- portunity to enjoy the lovely gardens. Christmas last year was cele- brated with a lovely meal at the George in Trottiscliffe." Sally said members had decided to support a charity this year and

the British Legion had been chosen. She thanked Bow Hairdressing in High Street, Snodland, for agreeing to display the poppies in their windows and said each wreath contained the names of Snodland soldiers who lost their lives in the 1914-1918 war. The clubmeets in the Paddlesworth Rooms at Snodland Commu- nity Centre every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
