Why study A-level Textile Design?
Textiles are more than just clothes. Did you know that the textiles industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and that the United Kingdom produces some of the world leaders in fashion, including Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood? Also, did you know that smart textile fibres are used in high visibility coats and the Speedo suit? Did you know that textiles fibres can be found in the wheels of a car and in the walls of buildings? Textiles are used in all areas of our daily lives and there are a huge variety of courses and careers available to students who follow the Textiles A-level course.
Textiles provides a wide range of study opportunities ranging from fashion, interiors, accessories and aesthetics to industrial uses of textiles. It
encompasses creative and industrial work including manufacturing, industrial and commercial practices.
How are the lessons taught? Lessons are lively and interesting with practical work and experimentation being central to success. You will be expected to participate in class discussions about current trends in the textiles design industry. Design is a subject that influences our daily lives directly and subliminally, awareness of trends and its impact on society is important.
Commitment
You will be required to attend all lessons. There are eight hours per fortnight. You will also be expected to read outside the given topic in order to complete the OCR A-level Textiles course successfully. This is a dedicated department whose students achieve excellent A-level outcomes.
Subject at AS Unit 1 -F521 Advanced Innovative Challenge
The Advanced Innovative Challenge provides opportunities for research, but also allows you to demonstrate your creativity and innovative skills when reacting to a design situation.
Assessment: 7 hour written/practical exam. aspects
Two 3 hour sessions in a day plus a 1 hour session at a later date. Worth 80 marks; 50% of AS Level, 25% of A-level mark.
of Unit 2 - F522 Product Study
This consists of a product analysis study and product development study. It gives students the opportunity to identify an existing product and develop it further for enhancement.
Assessment: Coursework. Worth 80 marks; 50% of AS Level, 25% of A-level mark
Subject at A2 Unit 3 - F523 Design, Make and Evaluate
Students will have the opportunity to design and make a garment of their choice incorporating skills they have already learnt. A written evaluation folder is also required.
Assessment: Coursework. Worth 25%of the total A2 mark.
Unit 4 -F524 Product Design Written Exam
Students will answer questions on materials, components, manufacturing processes and industrial and commercial practices.
Assessment: 2½ hour written exam with two components. Worth 25%of the total A2 mark.
45 Entry Requirements
Students should have achieved at least a Grade B in GCSE Design and Textiles Technology.
Students who have at least not
studied textiles should have
studied
another course in design and technology or art and design and achieved a Grade B.
Any student who has no prior knowledge of textiles should contact the head of textiles for an interview with a portfolio of work.
