This course is studied by Year 13s only. Why do an Extended Project?
The Level 3 Extended Project allows learners to study a topic area which extends their learning in one of their A-level subjects or in an area of interest. There are four different types of project overseen and assessed by a tutor before being moderated by an exam board.
Universities welcome Extended Projects as excellent preparation for under-graduate study and some even reduce entry requirements for candidates with this qualification.
The project enables learners to develop key skills in:
• designing their project • learning independently and criticising their own work • decision making and problem solving
• planning, research, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation
• the use of technology • creativity and enterprise
The four types of project are:
1. Dissertation A theoretical written project.
2. Investigation/Field Study A practical project.
3. Performance Development of practical skills resulting in a performance.
4. Artefact Designing and making a product or website.
Marks are awarded for managing the project, using resources, developing and realising the project and for reviewing the project.
The grade awarded (A-E) is an AS Level grade and carries the equivalent UCAS points.
