  Why study Physical Education?


A-level PE is a progression for GCSE PE students achieving a Grade B or higher and ideal for those students who want to pursue a career in sport or study further in this area at university.


If you have a wide-ranging interest in sport and would like to follow a course that is both interesting and challenging, then A-level PE could be the right option for you.


Subject at A-level The course is taught over eight lessons in a fortnight. The course is assessed over four components in the second year. Components 1, 2 and 3 are externally assessed. Component 1 is a two hour paper. Components 2 and 3 are one hour papers. Component 4 is internally assessed. Candidates compile a portfolio of evidence relating to practical tasks, which is moderated by the examination board.


Component 01: Physiological factors affecting performance


1.1 Applied anatomy and physiology 1.2 Exercise physiology 1.3 Biomechanics, including technology in sport


Assessment: 2 hour examination paper. Worth 30% of total A2 mark.


Component 02: Psychological factors affecting performance


2.1 Skill acquisition 2.2 Sports psychology


Assessment: 1 hour examination paper. Worth 20% of total A2 mark.

Component 03: Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport


3.1 Sport and society 3.2 Contemporary issues in physical activity and sport


Assessment: 1 hour examination paper Worth 20% of total mark Component 04: Performance in physical education (NEA)


4.1 Performance or coaching of an activity taken from the approved lists 4.2 Evaluation of performance for improvement (EAPI)


Assessment: internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence of the tasks and moderated by the examining board. Worth 30% of the total A2 mark.


Entry Requirements


Students should have achieved at least a Grade B in GCSE Physical Education and a Grade B or higher in PE theory exam.


However, for students who did not study GCSE Physical Education we


require a


Grade B or above in core and additional science.
